Pendant lights do more than just brighten up a room — they help define the style and atmosphere of your space. At GMT Lighting, we know that choosing the right pendant and hanging it at the right height can completely transform the look and functionality of your home.

Whether it's above your dining table, kitchen island, in a hallway, or beside your bed, here’s how to hang your pendants correctly and make the most of their design and light.

Above the Dining Table

As a general rule, pendant lights should hang around 600mm above the table, or approximately 1500–1800mm from the floor.

This creates a warm, intimate setting while ensuring the fixture is still a stylish focal point.

🔸 Tip: If you're worried about blocking the view, go for an open or minimalist design. Slim LED pendants can also provide beautiful light without adding bulk.

Above the Kitchen Island

The same height guidelines apply here — about 600mm above the bench. Pendant lights in this area help define the kitchen zone, add functional task lighting, and elevate the overall style of your space.

Choose pendants with good downward light spread to enhance visibility over work areas.

In Hallways or Entryways

Here, clearance and proportion are key. For standard ceiling heights (2.4m–2.7m), opt for semi-flush or compact pendants.

If you have 3m ceilings or higher, you can go bold with larger designs — just ensure the bottom of the pendant hangs at or above door frame height to avoid head bumps.

Beside the Bed

Looking for a sleek alternative to bedside lamps? Pendant lights are a modern and space-saving option.

Hang them 1000–1200mm from the floor, similar to where a table lamp would sit above your bedside table.

They not only free up space but also add a cozy and refined feel to your bedroom.

At GMT Lighting, we offer a wide range of pendant styles for every purpose:

  • Downward-facing light: Best for dining tables, islands, and workspaces.
  • Ambient or open light: Ideal for lounges, bedrooms, and social areas.
  • Upward-facing light: Great for enhancing ceiling height and adding drama.

Many of our pendants feature energy-efficient LED technology, dimmable options, and a variety of finishes and sizes to suit every home and design style.

Whether you're renovating or simply refreshing a space, the right pendant can make a big impact. Browse our online store or visit our showroom to discover the perfect pendant lighting for your home.
